Castle Hill
While a Senior Associate at the Office of Steinbomer & Associates Architects, I received the opportunity to design the remodel of this 3.5-story historic home. Despite its present grandeur, we initially received it after numerous catastrophic remodels which had clogged up many of the classic spaces originally enjoyed. In order to let the house 'breathe' again, we successfully tore through the rear wall and added a non-traditional, however, very successful family room. This addition provided a substantial kitchen extension, an interior drop to rear yard level and a continuous view corridor from the entry.
The design elements of the extensive remodel included, but are surely not limited to, the kitchen expansion with desk/bar area extension, a children's study area between bedrooms, handicap-accessible bath for Mother's suite, a contemporary master bath, an upper level porch reconstruction to afford a conditioned exercise area separated from the screen porch, a third-level bunkhouse with kitchenette and bath, and a landscaped/private rear court/dining area with pool/jacuzzi.
The new rear courtyard walls incorporated a custom mural by renowned artist, Malou Flato, a 'peek-a-boo' window for the introduction of visitors and concealed a rolling gate to ensure privacy from the rear alleyway. I also had the privilege to design the kitchen with historic beaded-inlay cabinetry, the newel post and railings, bookshelves, and several MIssion-style pieces of furniture which were custom built by Mark Maçek.
The house was featured in the movie "The Life of David Gale" (2003).
The commission of this house came from a friend of the Owner, Judy Birdsong, Associate, Steinbomer & Associates Architects.
