Project Description
Nestled on a ridge in the Frio Canyon above the gentle-flowing Frio River lined with ancient Cypress trees, sits a most unusual house built of local field stone with wings eminating from a hexagonal hub centered on a hexagonal fireplace. Facing the river are screened porches lining the house. The structure has a fair number of bedrooms and space but on holidays and some weekends, the large multi-generational family gatherings become a strain on the indoor space and additional accomodations are reserved in the nearby town. To alleviate the inconvenience, additional accomodations are desired on the property as well as outdoor common space for fun and relaxation.
The Hub
Geographically and socially centered in the compound, this structure is composed of a full kitchen, dining area, an island bar and a living area with fireplace and has twin bungalows with prime river views, a bunk bed loft and observation deck attached. It opens onto the Commons for outdoor lounging and activities and the twin bungalows screened porch with easy access to the Main house which also ties into the Commons.

The Commons
Centrally located and nestled between 2 young red oaks is the heart of the Commons. It was intended to feature a fire pit, hot tub and outdoor showers. Care was taken not to interfere with the existing trees. Extensive site line studies were done to prevent obstructed views from the screened porches both existing and to be added. The Commons are bi-level to achieve this. Care was taken to make all Commons features wheelchair accessible. As the Commons are bi-level, upper and lower paths run through the compound. With the night skies also being a feature of the canyon, paths are lit with garden lights rather than overhead or raised lighting. Rainwater run off from the roofs and natural site contours is channeled under the Commons and released to pools along the lower path.
