Lake Austin
As a Senior Associate in the firm of Steinbomer & Associates Architects and the Designer/Project Manager of this project prior to construction, Suzanne was given free reigns to design what the Owners requested: a hill-country home for their wintering in Austin.
This Lake Austin project came to us as a fully-remodeled 60's home articulated by sub par fixtures, fittings, windows and original appliances. The site, however, was simply gorgeous. Perched on a bend, high above Lake Austin, the property was chosen and upon purchase, the Client's full intention was to start fresh and so we did. The Owners approved a Feng-shui analysis and even participated in a site blessing prior to new construction.
The design concept includes two primary zones, one for everyday living and one for entertaining and family. The core living space off a large kitchen and dining area includes a sizable den, office, 2nd-story exercise room, master suite with staging area/cedar closet and laundry area/mud room. This zone, at the kitchen, expands into the formal dining room, formal living with separate entry, cloak area, bar and half-bath. The guest suites are accessed through this luminous space. This layout affords the Clients the ability to 'shut-down' the formal areas when not in use. An extensive outdoor patio and entertainment area was created at lakefront views against the staggered volumes of the house, not only affording expansive view corridors through the large windowed walls of each living space, it also provides a visible extension from the home interior up and down the lake and an elegant exterior gathering area with full grill/bar service areas.
About the final design, two very important credits need to be given: to Craig Nasso, Associate, who created a beautiful tower elevation and; to Michael Barber, Senior Associate, without whose idea for chimney/end walls, the roof would have never worked. In addition, my Associate Mark Evans was invaluable to me in all research for and facilitation of this project.
This project won Builder Magazine's Grand Award for 'Best Custom Home over 3500 s.f.', 2003, Washington, D.C.
Suzanne Rose functioned as both Project Designer and Project Manager prior to construction.
