Opal Divine's Pennfield
As Principal Architect and Project Manager . . . Opal Divine's - Penn Field was conceived to fit into an existing shell structure located on Congress Avenue at the front of a redeveloped Air Force base. This would be the first and only restaurant in this diverse and artsy development. The Owner came with a specific list of needs: a full kitchen, full bar, a smoking lounge, and an exterior deck/live music area. The kitchen/bathrooms and bar area defined the space allowable for interior dining capacity. A custom bar with stone backdrop is a reference to the original Opal Divine's previously on 6th street in the historic Old Stonehouse Brewery.
Two interior wait stations provided 360º circulation through expansive kitchen and a third was located in a new outbuilding on the large exterior deck. This new structure also included a roll-up window which provides a sound booth for live music venues. Of course, a small bandstand was also designed to please the Owner's desire to continue to promote live music in Austin. This deck was designed in order to hold a 'standing room only' crowd, perching high over Congress Avenue to the West. In so doing, it was necessary to design canopies for sun shading during hot months.
A smoking/game room was included with a second story lounge that required an entirely separate air evacuation system in order to meet the progress of Austin's Smoking Ordinance. Custom railings line the stairway and balcony-like space. Custom booths line the front window wall and a large bench wall nestles into a void at the front dining area which is primarily leased out for meetings and conferences. Of course, the entire restaurant is ADA Accessible and pet friendly.
